Service life of SKYLOTEC products

Due to the fact that SKYLOTEC products are made of the highest quality materials, under normal usage conditions a maximum service life that exceeds the recommendations of the DGUV 112-198 regulation can be assumed.

As required by the new PPE regulation, SKYLOTEC products will be labelled with a new maximum service life. Changes to instructions for use and labels as well as the adaptation of our asset management database HOMEBASE are scheduled but will take some time to implement. The changes will, however, be completed by the time the PPE regulation comes into force on 21/04/2019. However, we have already increased the maximum service life for our current products, even if the documentation has not yet been revised.

All SKYLOTEC products produced from January 2018 onwards can be used for a maximum of 10 years. In the event of any conflicting information appearing in instruction manuals or HOMEBASE, for example, this letter will serve as confirmation.

An overview of the maximum service life per product group can be found here.

SKYLOTEC introduces its new Claw Line fall-arrest system for steel cables

With its Claw Line steel cable fall-arrest system, SKYLOTEC offers a new solution for fall protection on ladders. The system can easily be installed on existing structures or on ladders. It can also be adjusted flexibly to suit specific on-site requirements.

The Claw Line is certified according to the latest EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 standard and approved for stainless steel cables with a diameter of 8 mm. Along with the associated innovative Claw cable runner users can permanently climb safely up and down the fall-arrest system.

Servicing or maintenance workers use permanent fall-arrest installations to protect themselves from a dangerous fall. This is the case, for example, for those working in telecommunications, on power masts, energy supplies, wind turbines, high-bay storage or on enclosed access ladders in the wastewater industry. With the Claw Line, SKYLOTEC now offers a latest state-of-the-art steel cable fall-arrest system with an 8 mm stainless steel cable for vertical ascent and descent using ladders. The system is based on a stainless steel cable guide; easily traversable intermediate brackets fix the cable and prevent any disruptive displacements. This makes it possible for workers to climb safely up or down to their place of work.

Three basic systems, plenty of potential

The Claw Line can be installed on existing structures or attached straight onto a ladder. The system is available in three basic versions, each of which needs only a small number of basic elements. Each version has a stainless steel cable, intermediate supports and a tensioning element. This makes it easier to plan the installation. The various versions can also be combined with one another flexibly as required – as can the upper and lower anchor points. This makes it possible, for example, to choose a ladder anchor point at the bottom and a structural anchor point at the ceiling or the other way around. This leads to a wide variety of configuration options compared with previous systems. The Claw Line can therefore be adapted easily to suit the specific on-site requirements. The individual components are also packaged efficiently in small pack sizes so that they can easily be transported to the place of installation. An additional benefit is that the modular system is easy to understand and practically self-explanatory. This makes it easy to install. The top end of the stainless steel cable is always fully assembled and clamped onto a grommet. At the bottom end, it is completely enclosed by the tensioning element. This significantly reduces the risk of injuring hands by gripping open strands during installation, as well as during subsequent use. For installation on aluminium ladders, the top three rungs are also reinforced by threaded rods and counter plates. For each potential system version, the same tensioning element is installed to achieve the required tension of 80 kg. This is achieved simply by rotating the turnbuckle. When it comes to safety, the tensioning element offers an additional advantage: the laser marking indicates at all times whether the adequate tension still exists. This means that users can carry out a visual check to see whether they can still attach themselves to the Claw Line or whether they need to retighten the tensioning element first.

The SKYLOTEC Claw Line steel cable fall-arrest system can also be installed on existing structures using a structural anchor point.

The basic elements of the Claw Line can be combined with one another flexibly as required. For example, the entire system can be installed on a ladder.

Made exclusively from stainless steel

Compared with previous solutions, the fall-arrest system also offers another advantage: it is made exclusively from stainless steel and is corrosion resistant. This also makes the Claw Line ideal for use in the salt water atmosphere of the offshore, near shore and onshore sectors, as well as in water supplies and sewage disposal. The steel cable fall-arrest system is EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 certified. A maximum of three people can attach themselves at the same time.

Climbing in combination with the Claw cable runner

The Claw Line fall-arrest system can be used in combination with the SKYLOTEC Claw cable runner. This boasts features that enable simplified application and reduce the risk of an accident. For instance, the runner is secured directly in a number of ways to prevent incorrect use in error. In addition, the brake shoe opens with a light tug on the carabiner, while the runner follows the user up or down without manual intervention. This makes climbing practically effortless. The cable runner in combination with the Claw Line is certified in accordance with EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 as guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line. It secures a maximum of one person weighing from 50 to 150 kg.

Claiming the title at the speed of light - Yannick Flohé is the new German speed climbing champion

Last weekend at the Bergstation climbing centre in Hilden, it all came down to tenths of second. This is where the German Speed 2018 championships were held. A total of 33 climbers (14 women, 19 men) pitted their wits against the standard speed route.

After a nerve-racking contest, involving three top athletes going head to head in a tight race, SKYLOTEC athlete Yannick Flohé finally came away with a hard-earned first place.

The exceptional talent representing SKYLOTEC climbed the 15-metre wall practically at lightning speed, finishing in an unbelievable time of 7.62 seconds. He and his fellow finalist were the only two to achieve the climb in under eight seconds.

This is already the second German title this season for the 18-year old from Essen, who has been a permanent part of the SKYLOTEC team since March 2018. At the German Bouldering Championships in June, Yannick won the national title and really shone beside his top-level competitors.

For his competitions, Yannick puts his trust in the LIMESTONE, a particularly light harness for top-performance sport climbing. With its innovative construction – for optimum load distribution – it offers first-rate comfort and combines all the attributes you need for indoor or outdoor climbing.

The SKYLOTEC team congratulates Yannick on his outstanding success and we are keeping our fingers crossed for him in his upcoming competitions.

Land der Berge magazine honours the reliability of the SKYLOTEC RIDER 3.0

The RIDER 3.0 is by far the safest via ferrata set on the market, preventing long falls down to the next anchor point. This is possible thanks to a free-running steel rope clamp, which blocks immediately in an emergency, preventing serious accidents when climbing.

Years of research and development work have been invested in this innovative system, bringing an unprecedented level of safety to the via ferrata. Having won an award for safety from Alpin magazine in autumn 2017, the safety features of the RIDER 3.0 have once again been confirmed by Land der Berge magazine.

Over an eight-month period, 30 inspectors from the Austrian outdoor magazine put a total of ten via ferrata sets through their paces during use. The testers felt safer with the RIDER 3.0 than with any other set and the safety award from Land der Berge is now the second time that the protective qualities of the set have been confirmed by a reputable alpine and outdoor magazine.

Flexible and versatile: the “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” fall arrest devices

Light yet robust, the new “Gordon” fall arrest block from SKYLOTEC can be used at great heights and individually adjusted to suit any situation. As well as the standard version for use when climbing up or down, the manufacturer of fall protection equipment also offers the “Gordon Rescue” version with integrated rescue eyelet, which means that it can also be used as a lifting device to lift or lower people. The addition of pulleys allows this fall arrest block to offer a variety of customisable configuration options, including use as a pulley system.

The new “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” fall arrest blocks from SKYLOTEC are even more versatile thanks to the use of textile ropes in place of fall arrest blocks with steel cables. They can be individually adapted to suit the requirements of a particular field of application and are ideally suited in particular for great heights or for use as a pulley system. Fall arrest devices are a component of Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PPFE) and are used as a fastener between the fall-arrest harness and an anchor point. A rotating swivel in the housing allows the block attached to the anchor point to turn. The advantage of these new solutions launched on the market by the manufacturer of fall protection equipment is that, depending on the requirements of their work situation, users can fit the fall arrest blocks with a textile rope in the required length. The devices work in both directions and, where required, can be used with a pulley in the base section in an endless loop for ascent and descent. Conversely, the devices can also be attached to the ground and used for protection when working with pulleys at heights. This allows these fall arrest blocks to be used for just about any area of application and makes them particularly suitable for jobs at great heights over 20 metres. Fall arrest blocks with steel cables, on the other hand, reach the limit of their capabilities in these kinds of situations. In the event of a fall, the device blocks reliably and catches the user on the rope.

The “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” can, depending on the requirements and area of application, be operated with various ropes approved for the purpose by SKYLOTEC, such as the Super Static 10.5. Their low weight and volume make it easier for workers to transport the devices when required as part of their (rescue) equipment, even when working at heights or depths or in confined spaces.

Robust, long-lasting and compact

Both fall arrest blockss have a milled aluminium housing. This makes them extremely robust and not susceptible to wear. The “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” have been certified according to EN 360, amongst other certifications. Each fall arrest block protects one person against falling. Its compact construction also makes the “Gordon Rescue” ideal for use in small spaces. And so it is more than just a fall arrest block. Its additional rescue eyelet also means it can be used for securing during lead climbing, belaying and for rescuing people. As a specialist in rescue solutions, SKYLOTEC also includes other hardware components such as pulleys as part of its range, which can be used as part of a pulley system to allow transmissions of 1:3, 1:4 or 1:5 and which expand the area of application of the “Gordon Rescue” substantially. One device can safely and efficiently cover many different areas of application for safety at heights in industrial applications and in the leisure industry.

Michael “Much” Mayr returns from Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the cradles of modern humanity and has plenty more to offer than just history and culture. The diverse landscape of the Ethiopian Highlands, offering a wide range of rock formations, makes Ethiopia an interesting destination for climbers as well. But why choose a country where hardly any areas have yet been opened up and very little is known about the quality of the rock climbing? For SKYLOTEC athlete Michael “Much” Mayr and his climbing partner Hansjörg Auer, it was a mixture of curiosity and a thirst for adventure. The idea came about after listening to the stories of a friend, who had adopted a child from the region years ago and was always raving about the impressive sandstone mountains. Also, the climate in the Ethiopian Highlands still allows for activities in the sun in March, which can never be taken for granted in Africa – not without reason as it is home to the hottest place on the planet.

For Much and Hansjörg, these were good enough reasons to take a closer look at the region and test the rock faces for themselves and so it wasn't long before the flights were booked. However, soon after that, the project looked like it would fail due to political unrest in the region, as a state of emergency was declared and travel warnings were issued. Fortunately, the situation stabilised once more and they were able to spend a few weeks in the Ethiopian Highlands, where they explored a wide variety of climbing spots in the Tigray Mountains. The quality of the volcanic stone around Adwa was often replaced by grass and vegetation on multi-pitch routes and it was not quite what Much and his partner would have wished for, but the country did offer a fair amount of climbing.

However, the original plan to make a first ascent of the highest mountain in the region via a new route had to be put on ice for the time being. The 350 metre high wall of the Samayata offers some interesting possibilities for first ascents, but after three hours of climbing, Much and Hansjörg saw that several bearded vultures were nesting on the route they had decided to take. With a wingspan of up to 2.90 m, bearded vultures are amongst the world’s largest birds that are capable of flying, and so you don’t really want to get too close to these creatures. Even though the trad route they had worked out using binoculars was not possible, Much and Hansjörg went on to discover a great project for the future, which will, however, only be achievable in the free climbing style with the help of a drill.

Before returning to their homes in Austria, they still had a few problems to solve on top quality granite boulders at the foot of the Tigray sandstone mountains.

It’s not yet clear when they will be able to go back to achieve their free climbing plans. The desire is there, but first on the agenda is a project in the Marmolada mountains for summer and a trip to India in the autumn.

Precautionary Inspection Check of SKYLOTEC Via Ferrata Sets

Neuwied 29 May 2018 – The brand SKYLOTEC stands for the highest safety in industry and mountain sport and guarantees this through high standards and regular internal tests. In the critical area of via ferrata sets in particular, we aim to offer the “safest via ferrata set on the market” since we launched the “RIDER” and our quality controls at SKYLOTEC are accordingly stringent. During the routine quality check of the last batch of the SKYSAFE carabiner, we noticed that its break values are scattered, even though the hardness tests exhibited no deviations. During an enhanced sampling, erratic values were even determined in a range that is no longer standard-compliant/safety-relevant.

The cause for this has now been identified and is due to the hardening process of the steel body. Since SKYLOTEC cannot fully rule out that older batches are affected by the quality defect based on the erratic values identified, company management has decided to collect all SKYSAFE carabiners from the market for an internal inspection. These are precautionary measures so that we can fulfil our claim of meeting the highest safety and quality standards.

We will use a new method from aerospace technology for the inspections, which allows SKYLOTEC to test and unambiguously evaluate every carabiner in a non-destructive manner.

The innovative SKYLOTEC energy absorbing lanyards have also be optimised again pursuant to EN958:2017 and the response behaviour of the energy absorbing lanyard has been improved. As an additional service, SKYLOTEC is also replacing sets that were delivered with an older version of the energy absorbing lanyard pursuant to EN958:2017.

End customers, dealers, professional users and rental stations are therefore requested to send their via ferrata sets to SKYLOTEC for inspection and any necessary replacement. A corresponding return form can be found on SKYLOTEC’s homepage for those who need it. The via ferrata sets will be returned inspected and in a technically flawless state within a maximum of circa 10 business days.

SKYLOTEC apologises for these circumstances and thanks you for your understanding and cooperation.

We shall abide by the promise to provide the safest via ferrata sets on the market!

You can find additional information about returning the sets here.

Innovation from SKYLOTEC at “DACH+HOLZ International”: The versatile and efficient MULTIPIN for trapezoidal sheets

SKYLOTEC has launched the “Multipin” single anchor point, which boasts several advantages when it comes to fall protection on trapezoidal sheet roofing. The anchor point, which is presented by the manufacturer at the Dach + Holz International trade fair in February, is suitable for just about any trapezoidal sheeting; it is smaller than comparable products and therefore helps to make logistics more efficient. This is because its ergonomic design allows retailers, steel construction workers, roofers and industrial fitters to optimise many of their processes in storage facilities and on the building site.

A variety of installation options, reduced dimensions and simplified operation in any direction – these are the qualities of the “Multipin” single anchor point, which can be installed on just about any trapezoidal sheeting. The new solution from SKYLOTEC is easy to install on trapezoidal sheet roofing with a profile height of between 35 mm and 200 mm. Profile widths of up to 420 mm are not a problem. The option of infinitely adjusting the foot as a base module means there is no need to study documents and tables, which is often be considered to be annoying. The “Multipin” is also suitable for all profiles, whether in a positive or negative direction. This makes installation easier and excludes the possibility of making mistakes when ordering the anchor points. Roofers, steel construction workers and industrial fitters therefore no longer have to pre-sort various different trapezoidal profiles, saving them time.

“The ‘Multipin’ from SKYLOTEC can be individually adapted to suit various profile widths of trapezoidal sheeting.”

When it comes to developing new products for fall protection, ergonomics are always an important factor for the experts at SKYLOTEC. This was also the case for the “Multipin”. The base module and pin are separated prior to assembly. Only after the base module has been secured using the toggle bolts, the pin is screwed on.

Lighter individual components and a convenient centre of gravity during assembly make installation easy. This particularly applies to large areas of flat roofing with a great many anchor points. The tried-and-tested anchor eyelet, which can be rotated 360°, is fitted as standard. This allows users to move around safely and without restriction.

Low storage volumes, rapid transport

When it comes to storage and transport, the “Multipin” stands out with some additional special features, since the volume of the single anchor point in its dismantled state needs just one quarter of the space normally needed. This makes it significantly easier to transport them to the roof surface. Many more assembly units than usual can now be transported via scaffolding or ladder towers. If the hoisting is carried out by mobile crane, for example, far greater quantities than usual can now be lifted up to the roof in one go. This saves time, as well as the cost of supplying a crane.

The single anchor point is made exclusively from stainless steel and is therefore corrosion resistant. Once installed, the system secures up to three people at any one time. Users attach themselves using the carabiner on their lanyards. By the time it is launched in November, the “Multipin” will have received the approval of the DIBt German Institute of Building Technology and the Ü mark of conformity. Building products with the Ü mark have passed tests on realistic reproductions of the relevant roof surface. This means that those installing the “Multipin”, as well as its users, can be sure that the “Made in Germany” quality is properly monitored. If you have any questions on the approval of anchor points and installations, SKYLOTEC will be glad to offer advice.

Further product innovations in the range of PPE

Next to the new “Multipin”, SKYLOTEC also presents rail and cable runner systems at Dach+Holz. Furthermore, the family-owned company showcases other product innovations as PPE like the new helmet series “Inceptor GRX“ and the fall-arrest blocks “Raptor“. Who wants to learn more about it, is very welcome to visit SKYLOTEC at Dach+Holz in Stuttgart/Germany at booth 9.308 in hall 9 from 20 to 23 February 2018.

SKYLOTEC presents its new fall protection systems at SICUR in Madrid

SKYLOTEC will be presenting its new Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and products for fall protection when working on roofs at SICUR 2018. The focus here is on easy operation and enhanced safety for workers. As well as the new “Inceptor GRX” helmet range, which offers many impressive advantages in terms of criteria such as comfort and ergonomics, the family company also offers the “Raptor” fall arrestor device. This is the first to feature two fall indicators, which clearly display the functionality of the device. Also on show at the exhibition stand will be the new “Claw” cable runner for vertical ascent, which reduces the risk of incorrect use, and the innovative “Multipin” permanent anchor point, which is suitable for just about any trapezoidal sheeting and helps to make logistics in the warehouse and at the building site more efficient.

For people working in the construction industry, the risk of head injury is higher than average. A helmet should therefore be a standard part of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent head wounds, concussion or skull fractures. At SICUR, SKYLOTEC will be presenting its new “Inceptor GRX” range of industrial climbing helmets, which provide reliable protection against this kind of injury. The models feature optimum shock absorption in the vertex and lateral areas of the head. They also offer high resistance to penetration by sharp objects. With this PPE, the family company has also developed a solution that offers plenty of advantages in terms of comfort and ergonomics. The cleverly designed details include a clasp on the chin strap, which closes automatically thanks to a magnet. This means that it is no longer possible to trap the skin on the neck or chin. An exchangeable neck band also holds the helmet securely in place and prevents it from slipping when the head is tilted. Continuous ventilation shafts in the EPS core of the helmet and maximum permitted ventilation slits ensure good air circulation and pleasant head temperatures.

“The ‘Inceptor GRX’ industrial climbing helmet has many advantages in terms of criteria such as comfort and ergonomics.”

Other details make it easier for workers to handle the “Inceptor GRX” model. For example, a multifunctional gear rack is fitted as standard. Accessories such as “Mute 26” hearing protection or textile components for protection against increased UV radiation can be attached to this. A 30 mm Euroslot on the front of the helmet and four helmet clips also make it possible to attach a headlamp. And so the “Inceptor GRX” models can be adapted to suit a wide range of demands for various work situations. An additional benefit is that components such as the gear rack, neck band and chin straps are exchangeable and can therefore be removed separately for cleaning and replaced individually when they wear out. The “Inceptor GRX” industrial safety helmet fulfils the impact and shock absorption requirements of the EN 397:2012 and EN 12492:2012 standards for mountain climbing helmets.

“Raptor” – the fall arrester device with two fall indicators

SKYLOTEC will also be taking its new “Raptor” fall arrester device to Madrid. The special feature here is the dual fall indicators – one on the carabiner and one in the housing, which is visible from the outside. These indicators use colour coding to clearly show whether the fall arrester device can still be used or whether it needs to be inspected. This simple external function check protects the user from inadvertently using a device that is no longer intact. Until now, it has only been possible for users to check their own fall arrester devices on the carabiner and not on the device itself or the brakes. If at least one of the indicators on the carabiner and housing shows a red signal, the device must be inspected immediately by a service technician authorised by SKYLOTEC. An expert can repair a device by replacing individual elements. This is easy to achieve thanks to the modular construction of the “Raptor” fall arrester device, thus saving time and money during inspections. All fall arrester devices are certified according to EN 360 and secure one person up to a maximum user weight of 140 kg.

“Claw” – climbing without risk

SKYLOTEC has come up with another solution for climbing on permanently installed climbing protection systems, which can be used for safe access for people working at heights or depths. The new “Claw” cable runner is suitable for vertical access to steel ropes with a diameter of 8 mm. It has several features to protect against incorrect use. For example, the fall arrestor cannot be mounted on the rope if it is being held upside down by the user. This is prevented by an integrated locking bolt, and a skull icon indicates the application error. In order to prevent unintended removal, the cable runner may only be removed from the rope if the user actively releases a locking mechanism. In the event of a fall, the carabiner swings very suddenly downwards and blocks the cable guide. This allows the “Claw” to reduce the impact force to a moderate level.

The runner is suitable for maintenance or servicing work on wind turbines, buildings, masts or manholes and is EN 353-1:2014 certified as a guided type fall arrester including a rigid anchor line. The “Claw” secures a maximum of one person weighing between 50 kg and 150 kg.

“Multipin” – suitable for just about any trapezoidal sheeting

In addition to rail and rope safety systems for fall protection, the new “Multipin” permanent anchor point will also be on show at the exhibition stand. This is suitable for just about any trapezoidal sheeting and can be installed on trapezoidal sheet roofing with profile heights of between 35 mm and 200 mm. Profile widths of up to 420 mm are not a problem. The foot as a base module can be infinitely adjusted. This means that there is no need to study documents and tables to find out which is the right profile width, which is often considered to be a nuisance. The “Multipin” is also suitable for profiles in a positive or negative direction. This makes installation easier and excludes the possibility of making mistakes when ordering the anchor points. An additional benefit is that, when dismantled, the new fixed anchor point only takes up a quarter of the space required by previous solutions. This not only makes storage easier, it also makes it easier to carry up to the roof. Many more assembly units than usual can now be transported via scaffolding or ladder towers and a mobile crane. The “Multipin” has the approval of the DIBt German Institute of Building Technology and bears the Ü mark of conformity.

If you would like to find out more about SKYLOTEC’s wide range of products and innovations, come and see for yourself by visiting us from 20 to 23 February at stand F16, hall 6 at SICUR in Madrid.

Comfortable, safe, versatile - SKYLOTEC provides optimum head protection with the INCEPTOR GRX

With the “Inceptor GRX” industrial climbing helmet, the manufacturer SKYLOTEC has developed a solution offering many impressive advantages in terms of criteria such as comfort and ergonomics. The new range of helmets features an EPS core with well-designed interior padding and the maximum permitted ventilation openings, making it comfortable to wear. Various accessories such as hearing protection and headlamp can also easily be added. The wide range of adjustment options makes the “Inceptor GRX” suitable for a variety of applications in trade and industry.

People working in the construction industry, at heights or in sewer shafts, as well as in many other branches of industry, have an above-average risk of head injury. In these kinds of work situations, they must therefore wear a helmet as part of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). SKYLOTEC offers reliable protection against head wounds, concussion or even skull fractures with its new “Inceptor GRX” industrial climbing helmet. The helmet features optimum shock absorption in the vertex and lateral areas of the head. It also offers high resistance to penetration by sharp objects. The family-run company, which develops and manufactures its products in Germany, has come up with a PPE solution that focuses on users’ requirements when it comes to comfort and ergonomics. After all, a perfect fit and ease of use are important criteria to ensure that the helmet will be worn at all.

Cleverly designed details, exchangeable components

The cleverly designed details include, for example, a clasp on the chinstrap, which is easy and convenient to open and close. The clasp closes automatically thanks to a magnet, so it's impossible to trap the skin on the neck or chin. The “Inceptor GRX” is also available without chinstrap – for example for activities carried out exclusively on the ground. An exchangeable adjuster sits deep on the back of the head. This holds the helmet securely in place and prevents it from slipping when the head is tilted. Particularly for people who have to wear their helmet for several hours a day, even during hot weather, the “Inceptor GRX” is a real relief. Continuous ventilation shafts in the EPS core of the helmet and large ventilation openings ensure good air circulation and pleasant head temperatures.

The INCEPTOR GRX industrial climbing helmet offers many impressive advantages in terms of criteria such as comfort and ergonomics

The “Inceptor GRX” also scores points with clever details that make handling easier for workers. These include a multifunctional gear rack, to which individual hearing protection, for example, can be attached. A 30 mm Euroslot in the front or four helmet clips allow a headlamp to be attached. The enhanced standard fittings ensure that any “Inceptor GRX” climbing helmet will fulfil the requirements of various work situations in trade and industry and therefore can be used in a variety of fields of application. An additional advantage: components such as chinstraps, adjusters, interior padding and gear rack are exchangeable and can therefore be removed separately for cleaning and replaced individually when they wear out. Highly reflective models are also available for enhanced visibility in the dark. Other accessories such as “Mute 26” hearing protection and textile components, which can be added to protect against increased UV radiation, complete the new SKYLOTEC helmet range.

Helmet models with various international certifications

“Inceptor GRX” fulfils the impact and shock absorption requirements of the EN 397:2012 standard and comply with the EN 12492:2012 standard for mountain climbing helmets. SKYLOTEC also offers special “High Voltage” models, which are certified according to EN 50365:2002 and therefore come without any ventilation openings. This standard applies to electrically insulated helmets for working under voltage or near live electrical equipment up to an alternating voltage of 1000 volts. These kinds of industrial helmets are therefore suitable for employees working on power masts in the energy supply industry. In combination with other insulating PPE, these models can prevent dangerous electrical shocks through the head. All models are available in black, white and orange.

RAPTOR – the first fall arrester device with two fall indicators

“Raptor” is the name given to SKYLOTEC’s new retractable type fall arrester. Intuitive to operate and inspect, it significantly enhances workers’ safety. A special feature is the two fall indicators that show whether the device can still be used. The fall arrester device is available in various versions with steel cable or webbing. The “Raptor” can also be stacked efficiently for storage purposes.

Fall arrester devices are used as a component of Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PPFE). They provide the connection between the fall-arrest harness and an anchor point. If someone falls when working at heights, a centrifugal force mechanism activates the brake, which then reliably intercepts the fall. With the new “Raptor”, SKYLOTEC has come up with a solution that significantly enhances the safety of its users. The device has two fall indicators – one on the carabiner and one in the housing, which is visible from the outside. These indicators use colour coding to clearly show whether the fall arrester device can still be used or whether it needs to be inspected. Users simply need to carry out a visual check of the colour of the indicator before each use to see whether the fall arrester device is still fully functional. This simple external function check protects the user from inadvertently using a device that is no longer intact.

The ‘Raptor” fall arrester device from SKYLOTEC is available in various versions. Two fall indicators provide reliable information on the status of the brakes.

Until now, it has only been possible for users to check their own fall arrester devices on the carabiner and not on the device itself or the brakes. The additional fall indicator on the device housing now offers a huge advantage: it clearly shows the status of the brakes. With a standard fall arrester device, an expert would need to open the housing and check inside to establish this. With the “Raptor”, it is easy to carry out the compulsory annual inspection: all that needs to be done is a simple check of both indicators and the rope. If everything is safe to use, the device can stay on site and does not need to be sent away to an authorised inspection centre.

Colour indicators display status of brakes

The clear symbols built in to SKYLOTEC’s new fall arrester device warn the user before they can inadvertently use a device that is no longer fit for use. A green signal shows that the device is intact. A red signal warns against any further use, when the brake has already been triggered. If at least one of the indicators on the carabiner and housing shows a red signal, the device must be inspected immediately by a service technician authorised by SKYLOTEC. An expert can repair a device by replacing individual elements. This is easy to achieve thanks to the modular construction of the “Raptor” fall arrester device. It is constructed in such a way that the various units are clearly separated from one another and can therefore be replaced individually. This saves money and time during inspections.

Clear design for the anchor point

When it comes to users’ safety, the “Raptor” boasts another clever detail. The fall arrester device is intuitive to operate, since the anchor point is designed as a grip shape and so there is only one obvious way to attach the device. An energy-absorbing plastic inlet damper also prevents the carabiner from hitting the device housing without restriction when the rope is pulled in. This not only protects the housing from continuously being knocked, it also protects the user from hand injuries and bruises.

The “Raptor” is available with various lengths of steel cable or webbing. The cable version comes in 6 m, 10 m or 20 m versions and the webbing model is available in 6 m or 8 m lengths.

The cable or webbing is cared for thanks to a pulley integrated in the housing. This protects both the housing and the rope itself from wear and tear. Another plus point: the special, square design of the device also makes it possible to store fall arrester devices side by side and makes them easy to stack. This also works with different sizes of housing, which particularly helps to save space and look after the devices. All fall arrester devices are certified according to EN 360 and ANSI Z359.14 and secure one person up to a maximum user weight of 140 kg.

IGNITE NIOB – SKYLOTEC presents a new model in its Ignite Series of harnesses

“Ignite Niob” is the name given to the new model to join SKYLOTEC’s Ignite Series of harnesses. And so the manufacturer of fall protection equipment now offers a new solution, which scores points with its many cleverly designed details in terms of comfort and ergonomics. The latest member of a range of harnesses that won gold in the German Design Awards 2017 is the ideal fall protection equipment for the energy, steel construction, rescue and rope access sectors.

‚Ignite Niob‘ is the new model of the ‚Ignite series‘ with many cleverly designed details in terms of comfort and ergonomics

Workers whose jobs involve climbing at heights cannot operate without Personal Fall Protection Equipment. It is essential, for example, to have a harness that fits perfectly and is straightforward to use. With its Ignite Series, SKYLOTEC sets new standards in terms of comfort and ergonomics. And now the manufacturer of fall protection equipment has developed a new model, the “Ignite Niob”, which supersedes the “ARG 62 Multi Access”. The harness is the first 6-point harness in the range and is extremely versatile. For example, it can be used by people working in steel construction or energy supplies, rope access technicians or emergency services. The “Ignite Niob” is certified in accordance with EN 361 as a fall-arrest system and in accordance with EN 358 for holding workers in position and providing support in areas where there is a risk of falling. It is also EN 813 certified for keeping workers in a sitting position for working whilst hanging freely on a rope. The model also has a combined abseil/fall arrest eyelet in the chest area. This allows heavy loads to be abseiled down safely and effortlessly on the back. The distance between the front eyelets is designed precisely for use with a Raderberger hook, which is used for abseiling accident victims. A textile loop on the back in the hip area can also be used as an additional restraint eyelet. The “Ignite Niob” is also impressive when it comes to functionality: material loops in the hip and chest area for tools or rescue equipment come as standard.

All the comfort features of the Ignite Series

There is certainly no shortage of clever details to enhance comfort for users of the “Ignite Niob”. The newest member of the Ignite Series, just like all the other models, features high-quality padding, which is adapted to the shape of the human anatomy and ensures optimum weight distribution on the hips. This is a real relief, as previously the weight load had generally been on the shoulders – and for several hours a day. This meant that users frequently had to cope with pressure points and considerable muscle soreness and tensions in the neck and shoulder area. Another problem that many workers will be familiar with: when they are on the move for long periods, the straps tend to loosen on their own. So they have to keep tightening them again. A new adjuster now prevents the harness from loosening during constant movement.

Another important factor is that the equipment should be as easy as possible for workers to use. That is why SKYLOTEC has chosen a cleverly designed colour system for all models in the Ignite Series. Orange contrasting elements are used in the upper part of the harness and grey in the lower part. This makes it easy to recognise where the top and where the bottom of the harness is, even when the user has not yet donned the harness. Additionally, the main anchor points of all models are bright orange in order to label them clearly. Accidental anchoring on the wrong eyelets or loops, which are not designed to hold in the event of a fall, can be prevented in this way. Details such as these are particularly important when people with little experience are using the harness. As they do not have a particular routine, there is an increased accident risk for them through the incorrect use of their Personal Fall Protection Equipment.

Innovation from SKYLOTEC: The versatile and efficient MULTIPIN for trapezoidal sheets

SKYLOTEC has launched the “Multipin” single anchor point, which boasts several advantages when it comes to fall protection on trapezoidal sheet roofing. The anchor point is suitable for just about any trapezoidal sheeting; it is smaller than comparable products and therefore helps to make logistics more efficient.

The ‘Multipin’ from SKYLOTEC can be individually adapted to suit various profile widths of trapezoidal sheeting.

CONREST — advanced rescue stretcher for fast transport of injured persons in confined spaces

SKYLOTEC has extended its range of rescue equipment with the “Conrest” advanced rescue stretcher. The new advanced rescue stretcher is particularly well suited to transporting injured persons as quickly as possible in confined spaces. The stretcher is shorter than comparable solutions, but protects and secures the most important areas of the body. A pelvic strap ensures increased stability of the patient.

“The ‘Conrest’ advanced rescue stretcher from SKYLOTEC is ideal for rescuing injured persons from confined spaces.”

Anyone performing maintenance in ducts and shafts or in the hub of a wind turbine must secure themselves reliably against falls from a height. In addition, freedom of movement in such areas is generally restricted. This increases the risk for the employees, especially if an accident happens in a confined area. If injured persons are unable to get themselves to safety after a fall, immediate rescue is essential. For precisely such scenarios, SKYLOTEC has developed a new advanced rescue stretcher called “Conrest”. It is lighter and shorter than the usual solutions on the market and more practical than a spineboard, which often cannot be used in confined spaces due to its size. “Conrest” makes it possible to prepare an accident victim for transport in a very short time so that first aid can be administered directly at the accident site. It secures the most important areas of the body and offers rescuers a wide range of options when it comes to pulling the injured person out of the danger area. An additional strap secures the injured person’s pelvis, providing important stability in the event of possible fractures. In addition, the advanced rescue stretcher is equipped with arm loops and a head attachment to stabilise the spine, head and arms.

Ready for immediate use in cases of emergency

“Conrest” also features a sturdy skid plate, which enables it to be pulled over edges without jamming. The advanced rescue stretcher also features a number of handles to enable rescuers to move the injured person out of the danger area as quickly as possible. Alternatively, the stretcher’s loops can be attached to a set of straps that are in turn connected to an attachment point. By connecting this to a carabiner attached to the rope wind of a mobile system, such as a tripod or Davit arm, the injured person can also be pulled upwards (e.g. out of a sewer shaft) on the advanced rescue stretcher. “Conrest” has a maximum payload of 150 kilograms. A foot cover, which can also be used to secure the patient's feet, is included as standard equipment. The stretcher, foot cover and lanyards (including carabiners) are all stowed in a single bag, which can either be stored at the site or easily transported, thus ensuring that the advanced rescue stretcher can be used immediately in an emergency.

SKYLOTEC DEUS makes safe and rapid rescue in emergency situations possible

When working at heights, fall protection is an absolute must. The same applies to having the appropriate rescue plans. In some cases, workers need to be able to get themselves to safety and solutions for self-evacuation are therefore required. Devices with centrifugal brakes are ideal in these cases. As a manufacturer of fall protection equipment, SKYLOTEC is the market leader in this sector – offering a variety of abseil and rescue devices from the “Deus” range.

“The ‘Deus 3700’ is small, light – and available to use immediately in an emergency.”

People working at heights or depths as maintenance technicians in industry or as power mast technicians cannot operate without fall protection systems. However, when it comes to safety, this alone is not enough. After all, workers may need to be able to get themselves or their colleagues to safety quickly in an emergency. SKYLOTEC has introduced new abseil and self-rescue devices for precisely these kinds of situations. The manufacturer of fall protection equipment is the market leader in rescue devices. As well as the long-established and successful “Milan” series, which is suitable for rescuing injured persons or for the rapid evacuation of several people, small and light self-rescue devices from the “Deus” series are now part of the product range. These are used for self-evacuation, for example if escape routes on a factory roof are blocked by fire. The main advantage compared with many of the rescue devices available on the market is that these abseil devices – like the “Milan” devices – have centrifugally controlled brakes, which allow safe, hands-free abseiling at a constant speed.

Self-rescue is sometimes absolutely essential

“With the rescue devices from the “Deus” series, workers can abseil safely down to the ground in an emergency.”

Solutions such as the “Deus 3700” are small, lightweight and will not restrict users as they carry out their daily work. They are worn on the body as part of their personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) and can therefore be used immediately in an emergency. If, for example, a technician falls from a power mast and is hanging on the rope, in some cases he will not be able to wait to be rescued. Instead, he must be able to rescue himself using his own personal abseil system. This is sometimes absolutely essential as hanging on a rope can restrict blood circulation – and in the worst case scenario lead to suspension trauma. This can cause death within just a few minutes. Since rescue services often can’t get to the scene of the accident quickly enough, especially in rural areas, and have not always been trained for rescue at heights, self-rescue is often the best solution. In some cases, rescue is hardly like to to be possible if the required equipment must first be fetched from a colleague or if it means waiting for the rescue services to respond to an emergency call.

The “Deus” rescue devices from SKYLOTEC are available in various versions. For users working at heights in the construction industry, carrying out maintenance work on telecommunications masts or working on wind turbines, the “Deus 3700” is the best choice. The rescue device is also impressively flexible: it can be used not only for self-evacuation, but also for workplace positioning. The “Deus 3700” can be used at heights of up to 180 metres and the maximum load is 140 kilograms. Like all models in the “Deus” range, the device has a milled aluminium housing, making it extremely resistant and long-lasting. The “Deus 3700” is certified in accordance with EN 341, ANSI Z359.4 and NFPA 1983 (12ED).

SKYLOTEC presents set for self-rescue from tall buildings

People living or working in high-rise buildings are often exposed to danger many metres above the ground. This includes the risk of being trapped by flames in the event of a fire. The importance of inhabitants and workers being able to rescue themselves in an emergency should therefore not be underestimated. As a manufacturer of fall protection equipment, SKYLOTEC now offers the “Deus Exit Kit” to allow people to leave a building safely and independently if other escape routes are already blocked.

Inhabitants or workers can use the ‘Deus Exit Kit’ to rescue themselves from a high-rise building and abseil safely down the outside of the building towards the ground.

A number of new high-rise buildings are currently under construction in Germany, where very few building sites are left, particularly in big cities and urban areas. This presents a huge challenge when it comes to the safety of those who will live or work in these kinds of buildings. Right from the planning stage, sufficient escape routes via emergency stairwells or turntable ladders from the exterior of the building must be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, scenarios do still exist in which these escape routes cannot be used. In emergency situations such as a fire, escape routes for inhabitants or workers may no longer be accessible as they may become blocked. This can lead to fatalities on floors above the source of the fire, particularly when these floors are too high to be reached by turntable ladders on emergency vehicles. For some people, it is therefore important to be able to prepare for such scenarios – for example by acquiring their own “personal additional escape route”. As the leading manufacturer of fall protection equipment, SKYLOTEC now offers a suitable solution for vacating a building safely via a window. Using the “Deus Exit Kit”, an individual can quickly and independently abseil down the outside of a tall building towards the ground.

Safe abseiling at a constant speed

The “Deus Exit Kit” includes the “Deus 3700” abseiling device, which has been used for years in industrial applications and by fire departments worldwide. The EN 341 certified device is small, light and fitted with centrifugal brakes. This allows safe, hands-free abseiling at a constant speed. The abseiling device also has a fire-resistant rope and can therefore be used even in extreme situations. The “Deus Exit Kit” is available in three different rope lengths ranging from 10 to 50 metres and can therefore be used for a descent of between 3 and 16 storeys.

The SKYLOTEC ‘Deus Exit Kit’ consists of several components for use in self-rescue.

However, simply supplying this kind of evacuation system alone is not enough. After all, before an emergency arises, users must also select a suitable anchor point. This should be able to withstand a load of at least 1.2 tonnes. An anchor sling or rope, also included in the set, can then be attached to a steel beam, for example. SKYLOTEC also offers other options, which can be individually adjusted to suit the situation in which the equipment will be used. These include an attachment clamp for steel beams and a door truss with eyelets for users to attach to their systems. These can be used to stick or screw anchor points to existing building structures such as walls or steel beams.

Learning how to use the equipment safely is essential

If users want to be able to abseil safely in an emergency, it is vital that they concern themselves in advance with how to use the equipment correctly. Learning how put the “Deus Exit Kit” on safely and how to select various anchor options are factors that that should not be ignored. SKYLOTEC, which offers a wide range of training programmes as well as a comprehensive selection of products, can be a reliable partner here. The family company from Neuwied offers training modules for private individuals and employees, which are specifically tailored for rescue from high buildings using the “Deus Exit Kit”.

Flexible and versatile: the GORDON and GORDON RESCUE fall arrester devices

Light yet robust, the new “Gordon” fall arrester device from SKYLOTEC can be used at great heights and individually adjusted to suit any situation. As well as an EN 360 certified version for use when climbing up or down, the manufacturer of fall protection equipment also offers a version with integrated rescue eyelet, which means that it can also be used as a lifting device to lift or lower people. The addition of pulleys allows this fall arrester device to offer a variety of customisable configuration options.

The new “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” fall arrester devices from SKYLOTEC are even more versatile thanks to the use of textile ropes in place of fall arrester devices with steel cables. They can be individually adapted to suit the requirements of a particular field of application and are suitable for great heights or for use as a pulley system. Fall arrester devices are a component of Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PPFE) and are used as a fastener between the fall-arrest harness and an anchor point. A rotating swivel in the housing allows the device to turn. The advantage of these new solutions launched on the market by the manufacturer of fall protection equipment is that, depending on the requirements of their work situation, users can fit the devices with a textile rope in the required length and various other features. The devices work in both directions and, where required, can be used with a pulley in the base section in an endless loop. This allows these fall arrester devices to be used for just about any area of application and makes them particularly suitable for jobs at great heights. Fall arrester devices with steel cables, on the other hand, reach the limit of their capabilities in these kinds of situations. In the event of a fall, the device blocks reliably and catches the user on the rope.

The “Gordon” and “Gordon Rescue” can be operated with various ropes approved for the purpose by SKYLOTEC, depending on the requirements and area of application. Their low weight makes it easier for workers to transport them when required as part of their (rescue) equipment, even when working at heights or depths.

Robust, long-lasting and compact

Both fall arrester devices have a milled aluminium housing. This makes them extremely robust and not susceptible to wear. The EN 360 certified “Gordon” protects one person against falling. The “Gordon Rescue” points with characteristics that go beyond a conventional fall arrester device. It can be used to lift and let down people or loads. Its compact construction also makes it also ideal for use in small spaces. And so the “Gordon Rescue” is more than just a fall arrest device. Its additional rescue eyelet means it can also be used for safety during lead climbing, belaying and for rescuing people. As a specialist in rescue solutions, SKYLOTEC also includes other hardware components such as pulleys as part of its range, which can be used as part of a pulley system to allow transmissions of 1:2, 1:3 or 1:5 and which expand the area of application of the “Gordon Rescue” substantially. One device can safely and efficiently cover many different areas of application for safety at heights in industrial applications and in the leisure industry.

For distributors and companies: Easy administration of fall protection equipment with HOMEBASE

The new EU regulation for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE regulation) has now placed increasing demands on manufacturers. Its area of application is overall more comprehensive than before. For example, the complete supply chain is taken into account when considering the traceability of products. Distributors may therefore be equally under obligation as manufacturers and must keep a full record of the PPE which they deal with. However, this is where SKYLOTEC can provide useful assistance.
Extensive obligations that have to be implemented are included in the EU’s PPE regulation which will become binding from 20 April 2018. It will, in the future, no longer simply make manufacturers accountable but also all economic players – additionally meaning such as distributors or importers. For example, anyone who as a distributor places Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PFPE) onto the market must record every article sold. This is intended to enable traceability of products throughout the entire supply chain. With the “Homebase” SKYLOTEC has already provided an asset management system tool on its homepage which simplifies the recording of products placed onto the market. Dealers can record their item data in this online asset management system in a straightforward manner with little workload. They are held on the system by means of the scanning of a data matrix code which is printed on the products and product packaging. As a result, serial numbers no longer have to be manually entered, the creation and maintenance of lists on your own PC is also not necessary. Administrative processes can be significantly simplified thanks to the scanning.

With the ‘Homebase’ SKYLOTEC offers a detailed administration tool which now simplifies the recording of products for dealers.

This will also be true when the statutory revision of PFPE has to be carried out and documented. Because both in large organisations and smaller companies a variety of products may be in use which have been purchased at different times and which therefore must be inspected at different cycles. It is therefore essential to have an overview and be able to maintain the inspection intervals for every single item.

With full documentation

The “Homebase” is a useful tool in such cases. Users of the asset management system may, for instance, be automatically reminded of coming revisions. The complete inspection history can be viewed for every product and users are also given full documentation. That is important if such as a technical supervisory officer of an employers’ liability association demands proof after an accident that the prescribed inspections have actually been carried out.

In addition, the “Homebase” enables communication to be carried out more efficiently. It is thus no longer necessary to contact the complete customer base. Using the data stored, individuals or companies can be specifically approached – for example, when the maximum service life, the so-called “replacement limit”, has been reached. This can be quite common, because even if it is cared for in the best conditions and inspected regularly, PFPE can only be used up to a certain time. The DGUV 112-198 regulation recommends for instance that such items as belts should be replaced after a maximum of eight years and ropes and fasteners after a maximum of six years. If this is the case, individuals or those staff responsible for occupational safety may be each informed on the necessity of new PFPE.

Staff team assists on all questions

An additional advantage: The data may be called up using a smartphone or tablet and are thus available when travelling. Anyone who works with the “Homebase”, additionally receives extensive support from SKYLOTEC. A team of several members of staff provides help on all questions relating to the use of the asset management system and is in constant discussion with customers. In addition, the manufacturer of fall protection equipment is constantly striving to further develop the administration tool and, as a result, to further increase its user friendliness.

SKYLOTEC also focuses on rescue with its new fall protection systems

Taking centre stage at A+A for SKYLOTEC are its new fall protection systems, which are easy to use and enhance the safety of employees working at heights. As well as personal fall protection equipment, these also include abseil and rescue equipment from the “Deus” range, which offer the potential for individual rescue in an emergency. The family company will also be bringing new solutions for permanently installed systems to A+A, such as the new “Claw” cable runner. This is suitable for vertical access and stands out in terms of safety thanks to its many well-designed details.

When it comes to safety at heights or depths, reliable fall protection on its own is not enough. Workers must be able to get themselves or their colleagues to safety quickly in an emergency. SKYLOTEC will be presenting its new abseil and self-rescue equipment for these kinds of situations at A+A. The manufacturer of fall protection equipment is the market leader in rescue devices. The product range includes the long-established and successful “Milan” series, which is suitable for rescuing injured persons or for the rapid evacuation of several people. Small and light self-rescue devices from the “Deus” range are now also available. These are used for self-evacuation – for example when escape routes are blocked by fire. These rescue devices are available in three different versions. The main advantage here is that these abseil and rescue devices, like the “Milan” devices, are fitted with centrifugal brakes. These prevent free fall and allow safe, hands-free abseiling at a constant speed. Solutions such as the “Deus 3700” are small, lightweight and will not restrict users as they carry out their daily work. They are worn on the body along with PFPE and can therefore be used directly in an emergency.

“Claw” cable runner – easier to use, enhancing safety

At the leading trade fair for safety and security at work, SKYLOTEC has other new developments in store – such as in the fields of PPE and permanent fall protection systems. The focus here is on easy operation and comfort. And so with its “Claw” cable runner, the family company offers a unique solution for permanently installed climbing protection systems, allowing employees safe access when working at heights or depths – whether on buildings or masts, in manholes or on wind turbines. The "Claw" is suitable for vertical access on cables with a diameter of 8 mm and is worn by users as a guided type fall arrester as part of their personal fall protection equipment (PFPE), allowing them to connect their body harness to the site's permanently installed fall-arrest systems. When developing this new solution, the company went to great lengths to ensure that the runner would be easy to use and that the risk of misuse would be minimised.

The runner therefore scores points thanks to its many well-designed features, which make it easier to use – and therefore enhance safety at the same time. This means that there are multiple features to protect against incorrect use: The fall arrester cannot be attached to the rope if it is held the wrong way round by the user. This is prevented by an integrated locking bolt, and a skull icon indicates the application error. In order to prevent unintended removal, the cable runner may only be removed from the rope if the user actively releases a locking mechanism. If the person climbing slips or even falls, the carabiner swings very suddenly downwards. This is how the “Claw” stops the fall. A built-in fall attenuator further reduces any forces that may arise in the event of a fall to below the permitted 6 kN, whereby the forces exerted on the human body are moderated. The cable runner is EN 353-1:2014 certified as a guided type fall arrester including a rigid anchor line and secures a maximum of one person weighing from 50 kg to 150 kg.

SKYLOTEC will also be presenting other new products at its exhibition stand from 17 to 20 October. If you would like to find out more about the wide range of products available, please join us at A+A in Düsseldorf – in hall 6 at stand G01-H07.
