The use of safety helmets, which originally come from the sports sector, has increased in the industrial sector. This also and especially applies to rope-based work, where helmets according to EN 12492:2012 are worn in many cases. The GWO standard is intended to provide a better level of safety training as regards wind turbine applications. It is for this very reason, in fact, that GWO was formed by leading manufacturers/operating authorities of wind turbines.

Catastrophic incidents and accidents are frequently the catalyst for the drawing up of standardised safety measures or for corresponding training. The sinking of the Titanic is undoubtedly the most well-known example here. Along BGR 198 the operating time of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is dependent on the conditions of use where the information in the user manuals has to be considered. Under intense usage the maximum operation time usually will not be reached. Harnesses and ropes made of chemical fibres underlie a certain aging even without use, for example because of ultra-violet rays or other influences from climate and environment.
