What are cable systems and when are they used?
Cable systems are permanently installed anchorage devices that provide users with continuous fall protection along defined routes of movement. Unlike individual anchor points, they enable users to move safely across larger areas without having to disconnect and reconnect their safety equipment at each anchor point. Cable systems therefore increase both safety and efficiency when working at height.

Rail systems, by contrast, offer advantages when particularly low deflection, defined travel routes or specific architectural requirements are needed. The more economical and technically suitable solution should be assessed during the planning phase on the basis of the intended use and building structure.
Which applications are particularly suitable for horizontal cable systems?
Horizontal cable systems are used wherever people regularly work along a fall edge or across larger roof areas. Typical applications include flat roofs, industrial buildings, logistics centres, solar installations, façades and maintenance routes on technical installations.
Automatic cable travellers often allow intermediate brackets to be passed without disconnecting and reconnecting. This maintains protection throughout the entire work route and makes work processes considerably more efficient.
What advantages do vertical cable systems offer?
Vertical cable systems protect people during ascent and descent on fixed ladders or permanently installed ladder systems. Guided fall arresters move along the guide cable together with the user and lock automatically in the event of a fall.
Compared with protection using individual anchor points, the user remains continuously protected throughout the entire ascent. Vertical cable systems are therefore particularly suitable for masts, silos, chimneys, wind turbines and industrial fixed ladders.
Which substrates are suitable for cable systems?
Cable systems can be installed on a wide range of structures. These include concrete, steel, timber, trapezoidal sheeting, sandwich roofs and other load-bearing structures. Different posts, fixings and system components are used depending on the substrate.
The load-bearing capacity, fixing options, roof construction and structural requirements must be considered during the planning stage. The cable system can only perform its intended protective function over the long term when the substrate and system are correctly matched.
Which standards apply to cable systems?
EN 795 Type C is particularly relevant to horizontal cable systems. It describes flexible anchorage devices with horizontally guided cables. If the system is intended to be used by several people simultaneously, CEN/TS 16415 may also be relevant.
Depending on their design, vertical cable systems are governed by other product-specific standards, for example those applying to guided-type fall arrest systems. The standard relevant to the respective project depends on the system type, building and intended use.
How are cable systems planned and installed?
Planning begins with a risk assessment and an analysis of all work routes. The cable layout, intermediate brackets, end points, curves, anchor points and required clearances are then defined. The aim is to provide the most continuous protection possible, with short access routes and a high level of user-friendliness.
Installation must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and must take account of the substrate, fasteners, cable tension and the structural requirements of the building. Professional installation is essential for safe subsequent use.
How are cable systems inspected and maintained?
Like all permanently installed anchorage devices, cable systems must be inspected regularly. This includes checking the cables, intermediate brackets, end fixings, tensioning systems, corrosion protection and fixing points.
